You may be wondering ”May I enable restrictions on my student’s iPad?” or “How do I set up restrictions on my student’s school issued iPad?” The answer is Yes, you may enable restrictions and this is how:

Fist open the iPad and swipe to the left to view the apps. You will then want to find the app called “Settings” and click it to open it. Next you will look on the left side and scroll until you find the “general” tab. Now you will want to scroll down on the right and find the “restrictions” section.

Next, click “Enable Restrictions”. You now need to set a 4 digit passcode that should not be shared with your student, then you will need to confirm this passcode by typing it in again. This passcode is used only for the restriction settings on this one iPad, and will not be needed for anything else on the device. Below is a brief description of each section:

This section is used to allow or disallow features of this device.

Safari

This is used to turn on or off the web browser on this iPad. We ask that you leave this on for your student to use the device for educational purposes.

Camera

This is used to enable or disable the cameras on this iPad. We ask that you leave this enable for educational purposes.

FaceTime

This is used to enable or disable the FaceTime app on this iPad. The FaceTime app is a video conferencing app that is built into the iPad. This is not necessary for school use.

iTunes Store

This is used to enable or disable the iTunes Store on this iPad. The iTunes store is used to purchase music from this iPad and has the potential of charging your account if there is a payment method attached. In most cases this is not necessary for school use.

iBooks Store

This is used to enable or disable the iBooks store on this iPad. This app is used to purchase digital books from this iPad. This app has several paid and free books. This app is used for educational purposes frequently in school.

Installing Apps

This is used to enable or disable the function of the App Store for installing apps onto this iPad. This is used frequently in class for educational purposes, we ask that you leave this enabled.

Deleting Apps

This is used to enable or disable removing apps for this iPad. This feature can be used to monitor what apps your student is installing on their device. This is not needed for use in school most of the time.

In-App Purchases

This is used to enable or disable In-App Purchases. This will charge your account if you have a payment method linked to your account. This is not necessary for school use and we recommend disabling it.

Siri

This enables or disables the built in “Personal Assistant” of the iPad. This may or may not be used for educational purposes but does not necessarily have any negative sides.

AirDrop

This enables or disables the AirDrop feature of this iPad. AirDrop is used to send files to another iPad that is within roughly 30 feet of this device. This is used fairly frequently in school for educational purposes.

Allowed Content:

This section is used to set limits for content on this iPad.

Ratings For

This allows you to choose the region of which the follow ratings are for. This is set to “United States” by default.

Music, Podcasts & iTunes U

This lets you allow or disallow explicit content in Music, Podcasts and iTunes U which are all audio apps.

Restriction (Cont.):

Description:

Movies

This allows you to set a maximum allowed rating for the Movies app on this iPad.

TV Shows

This allows you to set a maximum allowed rating for the TV  Shows on this iPad.

Books

This lets you allow or disallow books with “Explicit Sexual Content”

Apps

This allows you to set a maximum allowed age rating for apps on this iPad.

Siri

This lets you allow or disallow explicit language in Siri and allow or disallow Siri to search web content.

Websites

This allows or disallows web content. Your options are to allow “All Websites”, “Limit Adult Content” or “Specific Websites only”. Please do not choose the last option.

Require Password

This is the setting for how long you can go without having to type in your Apple ID Password again. Your options are to require a password “Immediately” or “15 minutes”.

Privacy:

This section is used to control privacy settings.

Location Services

This is where you can allow or disallow the ability for apps to know your location. You can set this for the entire device or for individual apps.

Contacts

This is used to prevent 3rd party apps from accessing your contacts stored on this device.

Calendars

This is used to prevent 3rd party apps from accessing your calendar on this iPad.

Reminders

This is used to prevent 3rd party apps from accessing the reminders feature on this iPad.

Photos

This is used to prevent 3rd party apps from accessing your photos on this iPad.

Bluetooth Sharing

This is used to prevent 3rd party apps sharing data via Bluetooth on this iPad.

Microphone

This is used to prevent 3rd party apps from using the microphone built into this iPad.

Twitter

This is used to prevent 3rd party apps from accessing your twitter account on this iPad.

Facebook

This is used to prevent 3rd party apps from using your Facebook account on this iPad.

Advertising

This is used to lock the Privacy > Advertising settings on this iPad so they may not be edited.

Allow Changes:

This section is about allowing changes to system settings and accounts.

Accounts

This is used to allow or disallow adding, removing or modifying accounts in Mail, Contacts and Calendars.

Find My Friends

This is used to allow or disallow changes to the “Find My Friends” app.

Background App Refresh

This is used to allow or disallow apps to refresh while they are not the main app in use.

Volume Limit

This is used to allow or disallow someone from changing the maximum volume limit that can be set from the settings app on this iPad.

Game Center:

These settings are all related to the Game Center app.

Multiplayer Games

This is used to allow or disallow multiplayer games that use Apple’s Game Center app.

Adding Friends

This is used to allow or disallow adding friends in the Game Center app.
